Wings' Bergey Emerges as Player of The Week
Forward Jake Bergey of the Philadelphia Wings played in last month’s first-ever National Lacrosse League All-Star Game and has risen to the top of the team in scoring. Now he has been awarded the NLL’s Player of the Week honor for Week 10.
In just his second pro season, Bergey has amassed 34 points (16 goals, 18 assists) after seven games, including six in this past Saturday night’s 12-11 overtime win against Toronto. The 24-year old had three goals and three assists, and now is fifth in the NLL in scoring. Against the Rock, the 6’0", 205 pounder scored with just one minute left in the fourth quarter to tie the game 11-11. Then, 2:53 into the extra session, he beat All-Star goalie Bob Watson for his second career overtime goal. Bergey had factored in two of Philadelphia’s four straight third quarter goals which ended a run of three straight by the visitors to tie the game at 5-5. The Wings’ fifth round pick in the September, 1997 NLL Draft was named the Game MVP.
The award is the second this season for the Salisbury State grad, who last season was honored as the February (1998) Rookie of the Month. The son of former Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Bill Bergey finished third in the voting for last season’s Rookie of the Year award.
