WINGS KEEP ROLLING WITH THIRD STRAIGHT
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
March 16, 1999
The Philadelphia Wings, winners of their last three games, today received their third straight NLL Player of the Week honor. Forward Jake Bergey won the award for the third time this season, for his 11-point performance this past Saturday night.
Three nights ago, Bergey established a new personal high for points in one game as he registered five goals and six assists in helping his team to a 16-13 win over the first place Baltimore Thunder at the First Union Center. The Wings, who began the season 0-4, climbed to 4-5 with the win. Bergey climbed to third in the NLL scoring race. The Salisbury State graduate was named the Game MVP and also collected his second game-winning goal of the season.
Bergey, shut out from Player of the Week honors in his rookie season, was third in last year’s voting for NLL Rookie of the Year. The son of former Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Bill Bergey was the 1998 NLL Rookie of the Month for February.
Runners-up for this week’s award were Cory Bomberry of the Rochester Knighthawks and Matt Panetta of the New York Saints. Bomberry was the Game MVP in Saturday night’s 20-15 win at Nassau Coliseum. He had seven points, including four goals on just six shots on goal, and won 15 of 23 face-offs along with picking up seven loose balls. On the other side, Panetta was the leading scorer in the game, registering nine points (6+3).
