Wings remain winless (the Philadelphia Daily News)
K'Hawks lose Dietrich, win game (The Outsider's Guide)
The Rochester Knighthawks (1-2) broke a seven game losing streak which began last season, defeating the National Lacrosse League Champion Philadelphia Wings (0-3), 15-12, in front of 15,183 fans at the First Union Center tonight.
"Inconsistency has plagued us early in games so far this year," said Wings coach Tony Resch. "We rally and battle back, but the uphill battle seems to be too large for us to overcome. Practice in the next several weeks will address this and we hope that as the team begins to gel this will become a non-factor."
"It's always difficult to come into Philadelphia and win," said Rochester coach Paul Day. "Derek General did a fantastic job coming off the bench and keeping us in the game. He doesn't practice much during the week, but yet he stays sharp. It was a total 15-guy effort. We know they'll take it to us when we see them in Rochester."
In the first quarter Rochester struck first on a goal from Dan Teat. Philadelphia responded with goals from Jim Rogers and Adam Mueller. Rochester goalie Steve Dietrich left the game at the 3:58 mark with a torn ACL and he was replaced by General. The Knighthawks and Wings then traded goals before Rochester scored four unanswered goals (Rusty Kruger, Patrick McCready, Casey Powell, Duane Jacobs). Tom Marechek brought the Wings within two, but Rochester rounded out the scoring on a goal by Tim Soudan.
The Wings outshot the Knighthawks, 6-3, in the second quarter, but failed to score. Rochester's Cory Bomberry and Kevin Dance scored the only goals of the quarter. Backup goalie Derek General was perfect in goal with three saves. The Wings trailed by five at halftime.
Coming out of the locker room, the Wings set the pace early with a goal from John McEvoy just 42 seconds into the period. Philadelphia continued its rally with goals from Tom Marechek and Jake Bergey. Rochester battled back with three goals (Jacobs, Kruger, McCready) in a minute and a half span. However, Philadelphia responded with three more goals from Marechek (2) and Bergey. Rochester held a two-point lead going into the last quarter.
The Wings scored the first two goals of the final quarter (Michael Busza, Kevin Finneran) to tie the score for the first time since the 7:19 mark of the first period. However, Rochester owned the rest of the game, receiving goals from Dan Teat and Chris Driscoll (2).
