Thunder take OT thriller (The Outsider's Guide)
BALTIMORE -- The Wings are 0-4 and off to their worst start in franchise history.
And yet, head coach Tony Resch still managed to find something positive to say after watching his team drop an 18-17, sudden-death overtime decision to the host Baltimore Thunder Saturday.
"We gotta make plays when it counts," Resch said after his team lost a National Lacrosse League game in front of 10,125 fans at the Baltimore Arena. "We made many mistakes, but showed some guts and stayed with them. We lost to the best team in the league and showed some heart."
Not enough heart to win, however.
Kip Fulks scored the game-winning goal at the 2:11 mark in overtime to lead the Thunder (5-0), which sits alone atop the NLL standings.
The Wings, who trailed 7-6 after one period, were led by Tom Marechek, who had three goals and one assist, and Kevin Finneran, who had two goals and five assists.
The Wings outscored the Thunder, 5-1, in the second quarter to take an 11-8 halftime lead.
Marechek opened the third quarter with his final goal to put the Wings up by four before being ejected along with the Thunder's Brian Reese for fighting.
Baltimore then outscored the Wings, 6-2, the rest of the period to end the third quarter tied, 14-14.
The Wings struck first in the final quarter, taking a two-point lead on goals by Jake Bergery and Michael Busza. Baltimore responded with goals from Fulks and Paul Cantabene to tie the game, 16-16. The teams then traded goals to end regulation tied, 17-17, to set the stage for Fulks's overtime game-winner.
Bergey (three assists), John McEvoy, Jim Rogers, Matt Ogelsby and Sean Radebaugh each finished with two goals for the Wings, who visit the Buffalo Bandits at 8 p.m. Friday.
Joe Hiltz led the Thunder with three goals and three assists, Fulks, Matt Shearer and former Wings star Gary Gait also had three goals.
