The Philadelphia Wings avenged a 9-7 loss at Maple Leaf Gardens from last Friday night with a 12-11 win over the visiting Toronto Rock tonight in overtime. Jake Bergey scored the winner 2:53 into the extra session. The second year forward had tallied with 1:06 left in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 11.
The win snapped a streak of three straight regular season losses at home for the defending National Lacrosse League champions. Philadelphia stayed alive in the seven team NLL by raising their record to 2-5, after having begun the season with four straight losses. The triumph tonight, before 17,057, brought them out of last place.
Bergey touched Toronto goalie Bob Watson one other time tonight and also had three assists. The Wings also got four points (3+1) from Tom Marechek. Toronto, coming in off a 13-9 home victory last night over New York, was led tonight by Colin Doyle who had five goals and two assists. The Rock’s Chris Gill also had five goals. The Syracuse Smash, led by ex-Wing Paul Gait, play next Saturday at the First Union Center. The Rock are idle next weekend.
