Eliuk puts on clinic in Wings rout (The Outsider's Guide)
For Wings, Bergey is Smashing (Philadelphia Daily News)
Goalie Dallas Eliuk and the Philadelphia defense held superstar Paul Gait and the Syracuse offense in check tonight as the Wings won their second in a row for the first time this season, 15-6. Eliuk made 45 saves -- and also had an assist -- and Gait, third in the league in scoring entering this evening’s games, registered just one assist. Philadelphia’s Jake Bergey, named Co-Game MVP with Eliuk, led the Wings offensively with eight points on three goals and five assists.
The victory avenged a 19-12 Smash win on January 9 in Syracuse. Tonight’s game, played before 15,678 in the First Union Center, marked the fewest goals against the Wings (3-5) in one game this season.
The Smash (2-5), who lost their third in a row, got three assists each from Todd Oudemool and Mike Benedict. Tom Marechek (4+2) and Kevin Finneran (3+3) each had six points for the Wings, who get another revenge opportunity in their next game, one week from tonight, when they host first place the first place Thunder, who they lost to in Baltimore on January 30.
