Default The List.

Here's the list. The question is now who does Boston select? If I was Boston I'd snake Mawlasky only to trade him back to Portland for all the draft picks in the left.

Protected Players
Tyler Codron
Cory Conway
Matt Disher
Peter Jacobs
Pat Jones
Brad MacDonald
Brodie Merrill
Peter Morgan
Richard Morgan
Ryan Powell
Scott Stewart
Joel Weber

Unprotected Players
Bruce Alexander
Adam Bysouth
Matt Dwane
Dallas Eliuk
Ray Guze
Mike Kilby
Derek Lowe
Derek Malawsky
Spencer Martin
Scott Mazuran
Kyle McEwen
David Morgan
Jonathan Munk
Scott Stapleford

Malawsky is the most valuable player on the list and there aren't many Ontario players to choose from, so I'd guess a draft and trade as well.

I find it interesting that Portland took Malawsky in the dispersal, only to leave him out there again for the expansion.

But then, I also find it interesting that, as of earlier when I went checking for lists, 2 of the 3 teams that had posted theirs had chosen to go with 2 & 10.

Maybe it has to do with the fact that Malawsky is 35 and Conway is 21. Conway is one of the best players in Canadian Junior right now and has a ton of upside. If he hadn't entered the draft a year early he would have been a high first round pick (and still should have been, IMO).

If you want to argue that Malawsky should have been protected instead of somebody else, that's fine (MacDonald and Stewart come to mind). But protecting Conway is a no brainer.

Edit:

In fact, I've just made a somewhat troubling realization. In the dispersal draft, Portland used the 12th pick on Derek Malawsky, passing at that time on Brad MacDonald, who went 16th to Chicago. Portland then traded for MacDonald and put him on the protected list while leaving Malawsky unprotected. Anybody else find this a little strange?

My only guess as to the rationale for this might be that the Jax thought that Malawsky was less likely than MacDonald to be picked in the expansion draft because of their ages. We'll see if this turns out to be right.

I wondered about that too, it's odd. Maybe there is a deal in place?

Protecting Conway over Malawsky was a no brainer.

Protecting Weber over Malawsky plus a couple of other runners was ... interesting.

Malawsky is an UFA, so if Boston drafts him they will be able to keep him by making him one of their franchise players but they will not be able to draft and trade him. so it's a safe bet he stays in portland.

Default Malawsky can go wherever he wants

It is a no brainer, as an unrestricted free agent Malawsky can make his own deal and end up wherever he wants.

unless boston takes him and throws the franchise tag on him...it could end up like that with veltman dawson and malawsky have palyed together so they might take him for the chemistry factor

guys im sorry to drag bandits into this conversation, but like i said, i am sort of friends with peter jacobs. and im glad to see him protected. now, i am sort of friends with kyle schmelzle, and well i have tried becoming friends with jay thorimbert and brandon swamp, but they are a bit tricky to talk to. now i cant talk to bandits fans about this because it will start drama...as usual, but if anyone knows about these players, do you think they have a good chance of not going to boston?

This makes sense. His UFA status definitely hurts his trade value big time. Nonetheless, they could still draft him and trade him back to Portland or somewhere else if they had a buyer in place prior to the draft.

UFA from the PLPA

Franchising an UFA costs quite a bit of money in the NLL world. If a team is going to franchise someone, the benefit of the player on the field should exceed the extra cost he will be to that team.

Quote:
Section 7.2 Unrestricted Free Agency

Any PLAYER age of thirty-two (32) or older, e.g. born in 1975 or earlier (determined on January 1st of the calendar year and not on a PLAYERS actual birthday), who has participated as a PLAYER for all or part of six different professional lacrosse seasons either in the Major Indoor Lacrosse League or the National Lacrosse League, shall be eligible for Unrestricted Free Agency. However, each Club may designate two PLAYERS in each season as Franchise PLAYERS. PLAYERS so designated are not eligible for Unrestricted Free Agency even though they meet the age and service requirements provided the CLUB offers such PLAYERS season compensation that is Fifteen (15%) percent greater than the Veteran maximum compensation for the season as provided for in Article 6.1.A above. In the event this agreement is extended for the 2006-07 season pursuant to the terms of Article 21, the CLUB must offer such PLAYERS Twenty (20%) percent greater than the maximum compensation for the season as provided for in Article 6.1.A above. Franchise PLAYER designations must be made to the PLAYERS, ASSOCIATION and League Office no later than August 1 following each Season for the upcoming season.

I see that Mr. No-Brainer himself Derek Keenan is continuing to bury this team with bad decisions!

[QUOTE=ND14;430750]Maybe it has to do with the fact that Malawsky is 35 and Conway is 21. Conway is one of the best players in Canadian Junior right now and has a ton of upside.

Malawsky over Conway - anyday! One of the Best...right...NOT! Maybe in Junior B, but there is a ton of good players in that league that are better than him, including in the OLA. Maybe if he got rid of the attitude he might learn how to be a player.
He is not in the same category as Ilja Gajic or Alex Turner, or even the top ten of the BC Junior League. All he has is a big shot. IMO!
