Pollock sitting out again this Summer?
With Brampton now owning his rights and loading up for a run at the Mann I thought this might have lured him back to MSL.

Entering this Western Lacrosse Association season, the Victoria Shamrocks had a lot of questions to answer. No. 1 on the list was how would this team respond after missing the playoffs last year for the first time in 19 seasons.

"Our guys are very eager to get back playing,'' said 'Rocks new coach Art Webster before the home opener against the Burnaby Lakers last night at Bear Mountain Arena.

"The guys are very anxious to address some of the things we didn't do too well last year. For us to be successful, we have to play as a team. We don't have a lot of superstars so we need to have five or six guys scoring goals for us. We are more dangerous if that happens because we'll be harder to check.''

The Shamrocks came flying out of the gate and looked like a very hungry team in posting a 10-6 victory over the Lakers.

Victoria goaltender Nick Patterson was the outstanding player of the game, especially during the first 30 minutes.

In the early going, the Lakers held a wide edge in shots on goal, but Patterson made one great save after another.

After Victoria had taken a 6-0 lead in the second period, Burnaby finally found a way to beat Patterson with its 38th shot as Joel Burgess notched the Lakers' first goal at 11:21. Overall, Patterson made 56 saves while Burnaby's Andrew Leyshon stopped 30.

By the time Burnaby scored for the first time, most of the damage had been done with a number of Shamrocks sharing in the offensive spree.

Luke Hinton, who was acquired last week for his defence from the Nanaimo Timbermen, opened the scoring for Victoria at the 3:36 of the first period on a breakaway after taking a feed from Ryder Bateman. Kyle Morwick scored three goals for Victoria while Hinton and Lewis Ratcliff each scored twice.

Hinton's second goal was a shorthanded effort in the third period. Tyler Heavenor, Kelly Hall and Jamie Roy also scored for Victoria. Ratcliff also chipped in with five assists.

Kerry Susheski sparked the Lakers with three goals and an assist.

Burgess, Kevin Olson and Rory McDade also scored for Burnaby.

The Shamrocks held period leads of 4-0 and 8-2. The three stars in order were Patterson, Ratcliff and Susheski.

ROCK TALK: The Shamrocks return to action Wednesday when they travel to Langley to play the Thunder . . . The Bear was like a sweat box last night and several times the players slipped on the floor . . . The next home game for the 'Rocks is Friday against the Maple Ridge Burrards. Game time is 7:45 p.m. at the Bear . . . The first three inductees were announced last night for the Shamrocks Wall of Fame at the Bear.

The team's first general manager Ralph Baker and players Arnold Ferguson and Duff McCaghey were inducted. The Wall of Fame honours players, coaches and other individuals who have made significant contributions over the years to the team's success.

Baker was the general manager for 14 years and was a part of three Mann Cup championship teams in 1955, 1957 and 1979.

Ferguson played six seasons for Victoria and amassed 180 goals and 190 assists in 210 games. He also played on the 1955 Mann Cup team.

McCaghey played four seasons and in 156 games, he scored 143 goals, to go along with 119 assists.

Baker, Ferguson and McCaghey were all charter members of the team.

Arrows dismantle Braves; Six Nations makes statement with 10-0 win over Kitchener-Waterloo
Posted By Ed O'Leary

Six Nations Arrows were playing without star defender Chris (Bubba) Courtney
and four other regulars when they lined up against the Kitchener-Waterloo Braves late Monday afternoon for the annual Bread and Cheese game at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena.

The Braves went into the Ontario Lacrosse Association junior A game with a record of two wins and one loss.

If Six Nations' 11 opponents wanted to know if the Arrows are serious about winning their fifth consecutive league championship, they should look into Monday's game.

Six Nations 10, Kitchener-Waterloo 0.

Wow!

"Defence is looking a lot better," said Angus Goodleaf, the Arrows' goaltender who earned the shutout.

"Coach gave us a game film to watch, which helps us learn from our mistakes."

Aside from missing Bubba Courtney, the Arrows were also without Bubba's brother, Scott (Scooter) Courtney, Ben Salo, Corbyn Tao, Tyler Hill and Miller Rusbridge.

The Arrows called up Cody Johnson, Jason Johns and Marty Hill from the Six Nations Rebels' junior B team and affiliate players Brock Smith and Eli Longboat.

"Obviously, it hurts not having Bubba Courtney, the cornerstone of the defence, but the guys stepped up and Angus had his best game for us," said Arrows' head coach Regy Thorpe. "(The substitutes) are not real big but they're tenacious, hard-working team.

"Kitchener-Waterloo came in at 2-1 and they're a good hard-working team. We're definitely a deep team."

Goodleaf, who is from the Kitchener area, played for the Burnaby Lakers last season.

"This league is a lot better than the B.C. League," Goodleaf said. "It has a lot better shooters, but I'm not saying I didn't like it out there. I had a lot of fun."

Goodleaf believes the Arrows have what it takes to defend their OLA and Minto Cup championships.

"Throughout the year, we'll just keep getting better and better," he said. "I think we've got a good shot to be in Calgary (for the Minto Cup tournament)."

Cody Jamieson, as usual, sparked the offence, scoring four goals.

Wayne Vanevery netted two goals and an assist.

Ben Reaume and Mitch Nanticoke each scored one goal and two assists. Jake Kicknosway-Loucks and Goodleaf each got three assists.

Holden Vyse got one goal and an assist and Brick Smith scored one goal. Randy Staats got two assists.

Logan Kane and Marty Hill each got an assist.

The Arrows, 3-0, will play in Brampton against the Excelsiors on Friday at 8 p.m. They'll meet Burlington at the ILA on Sunday at 7 p.m.

Shamrocks silence Thunder

Sharie Epp, Times Colonist

LANGLEY -- Once upon a time, the Victoria Shamrocks swatted away the Langley Thunder like they were nothing more than a mildly irritating bunch of summer bugs. Those days are over, as the Shamrocks discovered last season when Victoria, not Langley finished at the bottom of the Western Lacrosse Association.

But old perceptions die hard.

Last night, the Thunder took just a little more than two minutes to have the Shamrocks down 3-0 in their matchup at George Preston Recreation Centre. The Thunder hit the floor checking everything that moved, and forced several turnovers, before the Shamrocks found their feet, and gradually crept up the scoreboard. With four goals from sniper Lewis Ratcliff, the Shamrocks defeated the Thunder 11-9, to post their second straight victory. Last Friday, the 'Rocks opened the season by downing the Burnaby Lakers 10-6.

"Last year, Langley put us out of the playoffs, and they beat us three times. We can't just expect to come into this building and win," Victoria coach Art Webster commented before the game. "We finished in last place [last year], and that's something we can't lose focus on. We have some answering to do."

The 2008 version of the Shamrocks is considerably stronger and deeper than last season, especially with the return of stalwarts Kelly Hall, Ryder Bateman, Tyler Heavenor, Nolan Heavenor, and Chris McElroy (who'll be back by tomorrow's home game against the Maple Ridge Burrards), and the familiar flow grew stronger as the game progressed.

Bateman notched a hat trick, Tyler Heavenor had a pair of goals, and Ted Jenner and Nolan Heavenor added the others. For the Thunder, who outshot the Shamrocks 48-35 and were dangerous all night, scorers were Rob Buchan and Tom Johnson, with two each, Matt Leveque, Josh Joseph, Aaron Pascas, Graedon Cornfield, and Jamie Hackel.

"I think it was a great gut-check," Webster said. "The game could have gone either way."

Victoria started Aaron Bold in goal, but he went out with an injury, and Nick Patterson -- the star of the week in the WLA -- played the third frame. Langley went with Kevin Crosswell, who is Patterson backup in the National Lacrosse League with Minnesota.

The game was tight, tough and entertaining. Langley led 3-2 after 20 minutes and things were even at 6-6 after two periods, proving Webster was right to have been impressing upon his guys the need to forget about any more free rides.

"I'll constantly be in their faces. You can't assume anything," he said. "I thought our defence did a great job. Anytime you can hold them to under 10 goals, that's awesome."

On Langley's part, they're tired of being the team that never makes the playoffs. Coach Gerry Van Beek thought the last postseason appearance was around 2002, when the team was still based in North Shore. The Thunder went from there to Kelowna, and finally to Langley in '04, but the reputation as one of the league's have-not clubs has remained, at least until this year. News stories leading up to last night's season opener proclaimed this to be the season the Thunder start to create some lightning.

"We have a little bit of pressure on us. People are all expecting us to do good, which is a new dynamic for some of the players," said Van Beek, who was the assistant coach last year. He wasn't making any predictions at this point of the schedule, but likes the way his team has been building. "This isn't the year we're expected to be the belle of the ball, but we are expected to make noise."

The Thunder were still missing Garrett Billings (currently an NCAA scoring leader at the University of Virginia), Jamie Lincoln (the B.C. Junior MVP with the Burnaby Lakers in '07), and former Victoria Junior Shamrocks star Rhys Duch, who are all still at college. They're among a strong contingent of draftees obtained by the Thunder, who scooped up five of the first 13 picks in the WLA draft.

"The players we drafted -- they know they're going to be able to make an immediate impact," Van Beek said.

The main thing he was concerned about last night was whether or not the Thunder would stick to the program, with a tough defence and new aggressive philosophy on offence.

He got what he wanted last night, but the Shamrocks veterans are adept at eluding that kind of pressure, and took a 10-7 lead, the biggest of the game, on a Bateman goal at 10:59 of the third period. They needed it too, as Langley scored two goals to close the gap with three minutes to play, before Nolan Heavenor netted the insurance marker in the final minute.

"We had lots of opportunities, we hit six to eight posts," Webster said. "We've got to finish our opportunities, but at the end of the day we battled, and won."

Default Big Game Tonight!

I'm hoping to attend my first WLA game of the season when my Victoria Shamrocks play host to the Maple Ridge Burrards. The 'Rocks will be looking to extend their unbeaten streak to 3 games, and will be featuring the Swarm's Nick Patterson and Noah Talbot. I'll give details about the game tomorrow if I make it.

Patterson picks up another 1st star of the game tonight as the Victoria Shamrocks defeated the Maple Ridge Burrards at home 8-6. Both Patterson and Noah Talbot of the Swarm picked up an assist each as they helped the Shamrocks improve their record on the season to 3-0. I only caught the last 2 periods of the game, but the score ended up being much closer than it should have been. There ended up being a couple of fights and scirmishes at the end of the game, resulting in a few game misconducts. That should make for some bad blood between these 2 teams as they hook up again Sunday night in Maple Ridge to comlete the weekend home and home series. Stay tuned....

Somebody should have proclaimed "Let the war games begin" last night at Bear Mountain Arena. The Western Lacrosse Association season is barely underway, but the first get-together between the Victoria Shamrocks and Maple Ridge Burrards was definitely not a love-in.

Giving as good as they got in the pushing-shoving-hacking-whacking category, the Shamrocks pounded out an 8-6 victory, led by Kelly Hall's three goals and two assists, in front of more than 2,000 fans.

Now 3-0 on the season, the Shamrocks travel to Maple Ridge for a rematch with the Burrards tomorrow. After that, they have nearly two weeks off, before playing host to the New Westminster Salmonbellies on June 6.

Just as he was in his other start -- a 10-6 win over the Burnaby Lakers in the Shamrocks' season opener -- goaltender Nick Patterson was outstanding faced with the relentless Burrards attack.Victoria was outshot 52-29, but Patterson was on top of the his game, behind a defence -- buoyed by the return of captain Chris McKay and speedster Chris McElroy.

"We want to try to run the floor with them," said Burrards assistant coach Rob Williams, before the game, describing his team as "feisty and fast."

At first, it seemed like they might have forgotten to take the ice out, given the low numbers on the scoreboard. The Shamrocks had killed off more than a minute of a five-on-three Burrards power play, and George Westwood reinforced his tough-guy status by throwing off the gloves against Mark Philip, before Hall nailed the first goal at 9:48 of the first period.

It wasn't that the Shamrocks hadn't been buzzing around Maple Ridge goalie Jay Preece, but their shots sailed high and wide.

Finally, firing from point-blank, Hall dumped the ball over Preece's shoulder.

Victoria led 2-0 after the first period, and an exchange in the second -- goals by Ryder Bateman and Hall were offset by Maple Ridge's Derek Lowe and Athen Yuen -- kept the Shamrocks in front 4-2.

Hall completed his hat trick to open the third period, but Peter Tellis and Greg Hinman, on a power play, had the Victoria advantage chopped to 504 at 7:41 of the third period.

The crowd was getting a little worried, but Lewis Ratcliff stung the Burrards with a shorthanded goal at 8:59, and it was all the Shamrocks needed to recapture the momentum.

Ted Jenner and Ryder Bateman stretched things to 8-4, and two more goals by Lowe weren't enough for the comeback.

Tempers erupted and several scuffles broke out in the final minutes, but the Shamrocks left the floor smiling and ready for the next round.

Four-goal flurry in third gives Excelsiors the victory; Six Nations runs into hot goalie in season-opener

The Brampton Excelsiors scored four unanswered goals in the third period to defeat the Six Nations Chiefs 10-7 at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena on Saturday night.

It was the opening game of the season for both teams in the Ontario Lacrosse Association's major series.

In other action Saturday, the Akwesasne Indians got four goals and three assists from John Tavares in a 9-5 victory over the Peterborough Lakers.

The Chiefs will try to rebound from the loss when they face the Brooklin Redmen at the ILA on Wednesday night.

They also will seek to avenge Saturday's loss when they travel to Brampton to face the Excelsiors on Thursday night.

"It wasn't a bad first game but it would have been nice to come out on the winning end," said Chiefs' new head coach Jeff Dowling.

The Chiefs trailed 5-2 at the end of the first period but stormed back to lead 7-6 by the conclusion of the second period. They held that lead until midway through the third period.

"We had a couple of fast breaks that we threw the ball away on," noted Dowling.

"One of them, they came back and scored on a reverse transition to tie the game."

The Chiefs had plenty of scoring chances but Brampton goaltender Anthony Cosmo came up big in the third period.

"Tom Montour and Kyle Point had two breakaways each and he stoned them," noted Dowling.

The Chiefs looked as though they were going to regain the lead when a pass found high-scoring Dean Hill open near the Brampton goal.

However, the ball popped out of Hill's stick and into the possession of the Excelsiors, who ran into the Chiefs' zone to score the go-ahead goal.

Cody Jacobs scored two goals for the Chiefs. Billy D. Smith, Jamie Pillon and Montour each got one goal and one assist.

Craig Point
and Kyle Goertz each got one goal.

Isaiah Kicknosway-Loucks, Kyle Jamieson, Delby Powless and Peter Ragnar each got one assist.

"They all worked hard," Dowling said.

"Every guy gave everything they had."

Lakers looking to fill roster gaps; Holdout Shawn Evans asks for trade

The Peterborough Lakers started the 2008 OLA Major Series Lacrosse season looking quite a bit different than last year's Mann Cup champions.

A skeleton crew managed a split of games in Akwesasne against St. Regis Indians losing 9-5 Saturday and winning 11-9 yesterday.

Many of the top names from last year's club were not present. Lakers' coach/GM Jamie Batley said it may take to the end of June to finalize a roster.

Goalie Pat O'Toole may not return, junior grad Shawn Evans has requested a trade and is holding out and Ryan Cousins' status is unclear because of torn knee cartilage.

Mann Cup MVP John Grant Jr. is expected to sign, but has not, yet, said Batley. Several other players were away including Tracey Kelusky and Dan Carey, who aren't expected to join the team right away, Scott Self and Brad Self, who were on a family vacation, Chris White, recovering from a sprained ankle and Kyle Laverty, who was given time off to rest after helping (along with White) the Buffalo Bandits win the NLL title last week. Brian Croswell is awaiting medical clearance to return from knee surgery.

Making matters worse, Scott Evans suffered a rib injury on his third shift on Saturday and did not return all weekend.

"We went down with a lean team," Batley said. "We were missing 10 or 12 guys we're hoping to have playing for us. We didn't have a very deep team, but we only had one bad period. The second period on Saturday we lost 6-2 and gave up some easy goals. We worked hard this second game and pulled out the win. We're very happy.

"We're a little different looking lineup at this time," Batley said, "but as I said to some of the executive, who were concerned, and some of our coaches, we weren't going to Akwesasne to win the Mann Cup. It's not how many games you win in the regular season, it's how many you win in August and September. This year may be a little bit different than what we've done the past few years, but I'm working diligently right now to sign some players and make sure we have another contender."

Batley says he talks with Grant every other day.

"It looks like he's probably, going to be committed," he said. "The plan, I don't want to announce right now, but things are very favourable with him and it's a matter of working out some small details."

O'Toole, the backstop of four-consecutive OLA titles, is resting his knee which has bothered him for nearly two years.

"He's still up in the air," said Batley. "He's told us he really needs to take a while off. I've sort of stepped back from him at this point. We'll have to go with Derek Collins for the time being and see what happens."

Shawn Evans requested a trade to Six Nations where he played his final year of junior last year. Batley says he's not willing to give into his demand since Six Nations is offering little return.

"Our organization feels that would be a major mistake to trade someone of his calibre," said Batley.

"We feel we've coddled him since he was 16. The last three or four years he's come up and helped us, and we appreciate that, but we've also opened the door for him to play.

"In doing so, we've neglected to develop some other players because we knew he'd be playing.

"Now it's time for him to play full-time and he wants to go to Six Nations.

"We don't feel that's the direction the team wants to go in. We feel he'll be around for 10 to 12 years and win numerous scoring championships and help our team persevere and get us through the next five to seven years. We think his value is very high.

"At this point, it's a dead issue unless they come up with something that makes sense to us.

"We can't see trading a potential superstar especially after the way we've treated him for three or four years."

Evans did not return a call from The Examiner last night.

VICTORIA 11 MAPLE RIDGE 9

- - -

MAPLE RIDGE -- One onlooker suggested putting a balcony in the penalty box at Cam Neely Arena, as whistle after whistle blew during a chippy rematch between the Victoria Shamrocks and Maple Ridge Burrards last night.

Thanks mainly to a run of six straight goals in the first period, when tempers were still fairly calm, the Shamrocks continued their winning streak at the expense of the Burrards, banking an 11-9 victory for their fourth win of the season.

The Shamrocks, now in first place in the Western Lacrosse Association, also handed Maple Ridge, now 1-3, an 8-6 defeat on Friday at Bear Mountain.

"It all starts with Nick Patterson. He's displaying some of the best goaltending I've seen in lacrosse," said Victoria defenceman Buck Stobart, who could only hear on one side, after being hit in the ear by the ball. It was the fourth game the Shamrocks have held the opposition to less than 10 goals. "When he's back there making huge saves, it transfers out to our defence."

Peter Tellis, who picked up four goals for the Burrards last night, notched the game's first goal, but the rest of the period was all Shamrocks. The Victoria offence, which has taken a while to get in synch this season, controlled the period, with Lewis Ratcliff and Ryder Bateman taking advantage of a couple of power-play opportunities to start things off at 7:11 and 8:29.

"They moved the ball around real well," Stobart said. "[Burnaby] tries to hack and chop you. Tonight our offence moved, and they're way too athletic for the Maple Ridge defenders to cover them all night."

Special teams kicked in for the third marker, when Noah Talbot got hold of the ball deep in the Victoria zone, and outran everybody to the other end, scoring a shorthanded breakaway on Maple Ridge goaltender Jay Preece.

Nolan Heavenor went airborne to score the fourth goal on a hard pass from Ratcliff. Heavenor did a somersault and landed on his feet, before hitting the end boards. Tyler Heavenor and Curt Morwick, picking up a loose ball and firing, added another pair, for a 6-1 Victoria lead by the end of the first period, which ended with Patterson and Jayme Bryde in a slugfest.

With the teams in an extended four-on-four situation, it rained goals, especially for Maple Ridge, in the first three minutes of the second period. Talbot, taking a pass from netminder Nick Patterson, had another nice transition goal a couple of minutes in, but the Burrards scored three quick ones by Tellis, on the power play, Tyler Codron and Randy Daly, to shorten the gap to 7-4.

"They try to rough us up and draw penalties, and they're good at it," Stobart said, as the wide-open beginning quickly got bogged down with penalties. Both goalies make some terrific saves to help ease the pain, and the final three goals of the period all came with and without the man advantage.

Ratcliff used the power play to double the score to 8-4, but Tellis answered with Maple Ridge a man up, before Patterson got the ball to Luke Hinton on the run for a shorthanded goal just before the dragged out period finally ended with Victoria up 9-5.

The teams spent more time five-on-five in the third, but Maple Ridge was unable to gain much ground. Tellis, on a power play, and Curtis Hoyland scored for Maple Ridge, and Kyle Morwick and Tyler Heavenor countered for
Victoria, before Derek Lowe and Tellis added final goals for the Burrards.

After the game, Victoria coach Art Webster was happy with the win, but not the lack of discipline.

"I put it on the line. It's not acceptable," he said. "They're going to get cheap shots, but they have to rise above it.

"We need to be more disciplined, more patient, and stick to the game plan."

Arrows hit mark in OT

Arrows hit mark in OT

Six Nations Arrows are facing a tough task this season. They're attempting to rebuild yet still capture their fifth consecutive Ontario Lacrosse Association junior A championship.

In such a situation, the Arrows are going to have games like they did on Sunday night at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena, when they don't look like the defending Minto Cup champions.

However, they also are going to sneak out victories just like they did against the Burlington Chiefs.

Eighteen-year-old rookie Wayne Vanevery scored with five seconds remaining in a 10-minute overtime period to give the Arrows a 6-5 triumph.

The victory left the Arrows in first place with a record of five wins and no losses, not bad for a squad in a rebuilding year.

The Arrows know their offence will sputter, especially earlier in the season when players are still getting acquainted with each other.

The Arrows have the daunting task of trying to replace last season's scoring champion Shawn Evans, and Craig Point, who was the National Lacrosse League's rookie of the year this season while playing for Minnesota.

The Arrows were a three-headed monster last season with Evans, Point and Cody Jamieson, who is the only member of the trio back with the team.

"It's hard to replace two players like that but some of the veterans have to step up," said Arrows' general manager Scott Smith.

"We have a lot of talented young players but it takes time to adjust to A ball and they're doing quite well.

"We don't get to play a lot of exhibition games so it's all learning in game situations. This (Sunday night) is one of first games that we've had our team intact."

The Arrows do have moves they're allowed to make before the trade-signing deadline late in June.

"There are a lot of options we have to bring in one or two players that we might need," Smith said.

Jamieson scored two goals in the first period and Pierce Abrams got one to give the Arrows a 3-1 lead.

The Chiefs tied the score 3-3 in the second but the Arrows got a power-play goal from Ben Reaume at the 18-minute mark to take a 4-3 lead into the third period.

Abrams' second goal early in the third period gave Six Nations a 5-3 lead but Burlington wouldn't quit. Kevin Brownell at 12:41 to cut the Chiefs deficit to 5-4.

Mitch Nanticoke's goal at 15:08 looked as though it sewed up the game for the Arrows but the Chiefs had other thoughts.

Brownell scored at 16:42 and again at 19:16 to send the game into overtime. His goal in the final minute of the third period came with the Chiefs' goalie on the bench in favour of an extra attacker.

The Arrows will face Toronto Beaches at the ILA on Thursday at 8 p.m. before travelling to Kitchener to meet the Braves on Friday at 8 p.m.

That is extremely bad news about Ryan Cousins. Hopefully his injury isn't one that needs major reconstructive surgury. The Swarm can't afford to have their captain not at the helm...

Chiefs recover after blowing five-goal lead

Six Nations Chiefs looked as though they were going to cruise to an easy victory at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena on Wednesday night.

They constructed a 6-2 lead in the first period against the young and inexperienced Brooklin Redmen in the Ontario Lacrosse Association major series game.

Head coach Jeff Dowling warned the Chiefs between periods to guard against overconfidence, but when they stretched their lead to 9-4 by the 9:36 mark of the second period, the players thought the game was over.

They were as confident as the bettors on Big Brown when the colt was halfway down the stretch in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes. However, someone forgot to tell the Redmen that they were beaten.

Brooklin scored the final three goals of the second period and first two of the third frame to tie the score 9-9.

"When it was 9-9, I blasted the guys on the bench, the offensive guys, for letting them (Redmen) back in the game," said Dowling.

"It wasn't the defence."

The Chiefs took Dowling's words to heart. Jason Henhawk intercepted a Brooklin pass and beat Redmen's goalkeeper Matt Roik with a shot just under the crossbar.

A few minutes later, Cody Jacobs caught a pass as he cut across the high slot area and beat Roik with a quick shot for an 11-9 lead.

Brooklin's Derek Suddons scored at 11:22 but that was as close as the Redmen would get as the Chiefs held on for a 11-10 victory to even their record at 1-1 for the season.

The Chiefs return to action tonight when they travel to Brampton to face the Excelsiors.

"Offensively, we became stagnant and selfish," said Dowling. "And we weren't getting back (on defence). We gave up a bunch of transition goals."

Kurtis Wagar played goal for the first period for the Redmen before being replaced by Roik, who is regarded as one of the best goalies in the game. He is rumoured to be headed to play in the Western Lacrosse League shortly.

"We were up 6-2 and they (Chiefs) thought they were going to have another 6-2 period," Dowling said.

"Matt Roik made a big difference. He brought the game a bit closer." Henhawk made the offensive play of the game for the Chiefs when he intercepted the Brooklin and scored on a breakaway.

"Jason played great," Dowling said. "He scored another goal earlier (first period) that they didn't count but was definitely in."

Casey Powell, Gewas Schindler, Dean Hill and Henhawk scored two goals each for the Chiefs. Craig Point, Tom Montour and Cody Jacobs each got one goal.

Delby Powless, Point and Schindler each got three assists.

Billy D. Smith and Hill each got two assists. Isaiah Kicknosway-Loucks, Montour, Henhawk and Jacobs each got one assist. Shawn Williams scored four goals for the Redmen and Steve Hutchins got two. Geoff Griffiths, Colin Baker, Scott Campbell and Suddons each got one goal.

Valiant Effort Ends in Road Loss to Open Season
by Mark Stehlin

The Brooklin Redmen began the Peter Vipond/Wayne Colley era tonight in Six Nations against the Chiefs. After missing the playoffs two of the last three years a major shake-up ran through the organization and tonight was the first chance to see how it would work out. Prior to the game pacing in the back hall, Vipond said that he was unsure of what to expect as he has only put his players through their paces in practice and a game situation would be different.

Kurtis Wagar got the start for the Redmen with Matt Roik on the bench while Chiefs Head Coach Jeff Dowling went with Matt Vinc with Ken Montour in the back up role. Mark Gardonio and Wayne Paddick were dispatched by the OLA to oversee the game.

Things got off to a shaky start for the Redmen as the Chiefs opended a 2-0 lead on goals by Dean Hill and Jason Henhawk. At the midpoint of the opening frame Scott Campbell got the Redmen on the board. Captain and team leader Shawn Williams scored his first of four on the night but the Chiefs were relentless and took a 6-2 lead into the first break. Casey Powell, American field lacrosse legend, signed this year by the Chiefs and Vinc’s teammate with the New York Titans of the National Lacrosse League, scored twice in the first, one on a power play marker.

Gewas Schindler scored with less than a minute off the clock in the second period to stretch the lead for the home side. With 6:40 off the clock it was 8-3 for the Chiefs when Vipond decided to shake things up and gave Wagar the hook in favour of Roik. The move had its desired effect as the defenders in the Redmen end settled down. The Redmen were very effective in the second with five goals, three on the power play and one a man down. The game was 9-7 Six Nations after two periods.

The Redmen players left the floor after 40 minutes knowing they were still very much in the game and two quick tallies by Geoff Griffiths and rookie Steve Hutchins with his second of the night tied the game at 9-9 with three minutes off the clock in the final frame. The Chiefs opened the lead again to a two-goal gap before Derek Suddons flew down the floor on a feed from Roik to bury the ball behind Vinc. That was as close as the Redmen would get as the final buzzer sounded giving the Chiefs an 11-10 lead to leave them at 1-1 on the season and dropping the Redmen to 0-1.

Penalties on the night were 12 minutes for the Chiefs and 10 to the Redmen. Five power play goals for the Redmen and one short handed compared to only one power play goal for the Chiefs.

Redmen open their 2008 home schedule on Sunday June 1, 2008 at 6:00 p.m. at Iroquois Park Sports Centre for Scott McMichael Minor Lacrosse Night when they host John Tavares and the St. Regis Indians.

Woodsmen make statement with win over Aces

There could be no better measuring stick for the Owen Sound Van Dolder's Home Team Woodsmen than the Wellington Aces.

At 5-0-1 heading into action Friday, the Ontario Lacrosse Association Senior B League's Aces are the cream of the crop early this season.

With the Woodies sitting at 1-3-0 but coming off a lopsided win in their home opener, Friday was all about seeing just how far Owen Sound still has to go.

"They're the top team in the league so this is a real test for us to see where we're at and what we're doing and what we need to do," Woodies' coach Ian McGough said prior to Owen Sound's 7-4 victory.

"We've got a lot of work to do. It looks good when you win 16-5 (over the Mohawk Stars last Saturday) but there were a lot of mistakes made, so we're continuing to correct things. That takes time."

Friday was the first time Owen Sound has had its full roster together - with the exception of goalie Steve Dietrich, who'll start practising with the Woodies next week and won't play until mid-June. The lineup will likely change again before rosters are frozen in mid-July.

"We're still going to have more guys coming yet, but we're pretty happy with the guys we've got playing," said McGough, who is preaching tough defence.

"One of our goals early was to make Owen Sound one of the worst places to play. That's the way it used to be and we want to get that stigma back."

Friday also marked the return of Mike MacLeod in an Owen Sound jersey and he made his presence known with two goals.

MacLeod last played for a hometown team in 2004 for the junior B Dutchmen.

"It's nice to play in front of your friends and family instead of playing in front of people you don't know all the time," said MacLeod, who will also see action this season with the major Barrie Lakeshores while also serving as an assistant coach with the junior B Owen Sound Rams.

"I'm going to have to find a way to juggle all three. Right now the schedules are all working and I'm able to make all three, so it's been good."

Owen Sound took a 3-0 lead after the first period, with Chad Culp, MacLeod and Chet Koneczny scoring. MacLeod and Culp scored again in the second, along with Brandon Sanderson, to make it 6-2. LIZARDS OUTLAST CANNONS IN OT THRILLER

LIZARDS OUTLAST CANNONS IN OT THRILLER
05/31/2008 9:47 PM

UNIONDALE, N.Y. - During their first two games, the Long Island Lizards combined to score just 22 points and dropped both of their opening games. However, they erupted for a season-high 20 points and earned their first win of the season, a 20-19 overtime victory over the Boston Cannons at Mitchel Athletic Complex on Saturday evening.

Frank Resetarits scored the game-winning goal off a feed from newly acquired attackman Spencer Ford at the 4:01 mark of the overtime period to hand the Cannons their second straight loss.

The Lizards jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead in the first five minutes of the opening period before the Cannons stormed back to tie the game at 5-5 by scoring four of the next five goals, including a pair of markers from Matt Poskay.

Just over two minutes into the second quarter, Tom Zummo gave the Cannons a 6-5 edge with an unassisted marker before the Lizards exploded for six straight goals, including two from Resetarits, for a 12-6 advantage with 4:53 left in the firs thalf. Boston cut the margin to 13-9 by scoring three points in the final four minutes, including a two-point marker from Joe Kostolansky.

Led by two goals from Blake Miller, the Lizards opened the third quarter with three consecutive goals before the Cannons answered with three goals in a five-minute span. Keith Cromwell snapped the Boston spurt with 37 seconds left in the stanza when he converted a pass from Tim Goettelmann.

A pair of two-point goals by the Cannons in the first four minutes of the fourth quarter tied the game at 16-16. After the teams traded goals twice, the Cannons took a one-point lead when Poskay took a feed from Sean Morris and scored his third goal of the game. But, Glenn Adams scored an unassisted goal with just three seconds remaining in regulation to send the game into overtime.

Resetarits was one of four Long Island players who recorded a "hat trick" in the victory while Peter Vlahakis won 28 of 40 face-offs and recorded 13 ground balls en route to being named the Bud Light MVP.

Morris led the Cannons with two goals and six assists while Zummo had two goals, including a two-point marker, and two assists.

JUNE 3, 2008

Six Nations Arrows (9-0) 11 Whitby Warriors (5-7-1) 10 OT

Box Score

Six Nations
  • Chris Courtney 2 PIM
  • Angus Goodleaf 1a, credited with 6 saves on 16 shots - probably incorrect and should be fixed

Six Nations were down 8-4 to start the third period and came back to send it to overtime at 8-8. In overtime up north, its a 10-minute overtime with whoever is leading at the end of those 10 minutes the winner. If tied after 10 minutes, it goes as a tie in the regular season. Whitby jumped out to a 10-8 with 4:41 left in OT but Six Nations scored three straight with the game clinching goal coming with 17 seconds left in OT.

On Friday, Six Nations hosts Orangeville (6-0) in a possible battle of unbeatens at the top of Jr. A. That is if Orangeville can get past St. Catherines (4-3-1) tonight. Remember, St. Catherines has two assistant coaches with Swarm ties - Ian Rubel and Mike Lines.
