Default NLL combine

I know the NLL isn't the richest pro league out there but for the NLL combine. They have taken cheap to the next level and are only bringing in 3-4 players from west to the combine. In my mind this makes the whole thing a joke. In a league that hardly does any scouting (east teams don't come out west and west teams don't come out east) the combine should be a chance for all top prospects of the NLL draft to showcase their talents but they will be leaving out over 1/2 the talent. Some players will be missed out on.

Thats my 2 cents what does everyone else think?

It's the same as they do in the NHL. Bring prospects to the entry draft, put them through the ringer, see how they preform, then draft.

Ah, I see. Thanks!

Yeah, doesn't sound fair to the western talent.

I am a former Storm Goalie living in Socal still- I have a great job working for Cisco systems. For me to go to the combine I need to spend my cash to go to this one day event.
Flight 400
hotel 200 (2days)
rental car 120 (2days)
food-100

total 820

now I know what it looks like for goalies in the NLL since the Storm has left, and the sting and the Stealth were the only close teams, now with the sting gone, and San Jose has 3 killer goalies....what GM/coach wants to even look at a goalie that would need to Travel for all 16 games by plane across to the east???
Why would I tryout to show that I can still play, when I know the answer? oh, and plus I am US born so that hurts me too.
Will all teams send someone?

No, the combine before the entry draft is only for players who are draft eligible. There is another combine in Pennsylvania in October for free agents.

the org. post talks about combine, not the entry draft combine or a free agent. My point is that there is a free agent one too.

The draft combine is kinda stupid since people have drafted players based on the NCAA or WLA/OLA play. If the player get the invite to the Draft Combine- they should not pay a dime-the league should pay for the top 50 players or something like that and if drafted- the team should eat the average cost per player. This way you'll get players from all over the US, Canada (and the world if needed) to make this a bigger deal. Also, the league needs to promote all combine events better. If we keep hearing big time-we want to be big, we gotta start working it-just the website first since that is free.

ENTRY DRAFT & COMBINE SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

Quote:
The weekend of activities begin on Saturday, September 6th, when the league will hold a day-long combine for the top 40 prospects at TD Banknorth Garden. The players will participate in drills and physical testing, followed by the annual Combine Game at 7pm ET. The game is free of charge for fans to attend, and no advance tickets are necessary.
Last year's draft combine was in Denver the night before the draft:

Box Score

It had a mix of players from both BC, Ontario and the states but Denver was able to bring them in. Last year, it was played the same night as the Minto Cup final so players like Craig Point, Chris Courtney, Angus Goodleaf and Dane Dobbie missed it. This year the Minto Cup will be finished a week ahead of time so those players, if invited, can also be in this game.

Also, two of the four goalies were free agents since they could only come up with two goalies that were draft eligible.

Defintely, this was an U.S. players intensive game and probably will be the same again this year. Excluding Jokisch and Ogden, the backup U.S. free agents goaltenders, there were from what I could figure out:

26 - United States
7- British Columbia
6 - Ontario
2 - Alberta
1 - Iroquois Nation

14 of the players in last year's NLL combine game made an NLL roster in 2008:

7 - United States
5 - British Columbia
2 - Ontario
1 - Iroquois Nation
  • Tyler Richards - BC - San Jose
  • Tyler Codron - BC - Portland
  • Drew Westervelt - US - Philadelphia
  • Kevin Ross - Ont - Chicago
  • Merrick Thomson - US - Philadelphia
  • Jordan Hall - BC - New York
  • Justin Norbraten - BC - Minnesota
  • Steve Panarelli - US - San Jose now with Boston
  • Tom Johnson - BC - San Jose
  • Frank Resetarits - US - San Jose
  • Mitch Belisle - US - New York now with Boston
  • Jim Borell - US - Philadelphia
  • Mack O'Brien - Ont - Chicago
  • Brandon Swamp - IN - Buffalo

2007 Draft Results

Ten players in the combine game were not drafted and all of them from the United States:
  • Eric Pittard
  • Mike Gongas
  • Brett Garber
  • Liam Gleason
  • Jon Atwood
  • Brett Caretsky
  • Colin Checcio
  • Lucius Polk
  • Adam Zuder-Havens
  • Drew Thomspon

Then, those players who are not invited to the Boston combine/game are allowed to come to Philadelphia to take part in the combine that is run by the USIL and open to all. Here is where free agents can showcase themselves to almost 100% of the teams so they don't waste they time trying out for a team they have little to no chance of making.

It's about time the NLL stopped getting a free ride!

What free ride? People pay their own way to the MLB tryouts. The NFL combine is now JUST by invite but when Blesto had it you paid. Other scouting/combine companies you tryout for free but you pay a % of your contract IF SIGNED.
The indoor leagues charge for tryouts.
So what free ride are you trying to stop?

as much as id love to see the NLL join the rest of the major sports leagues by giving back to the leagues that develope these players, whether its ncaa or canadian boxla teams, i know its not going to happen.

I DONT THINK MY COMMENT COULD HAVE BEEN ANY CLEARER - THE ENTRY DRAFT COMBINE IS FOR "DRAFT ELIGIBLE" PLAYERS - THE USIL CAMP IN PA IS FOR FREE AGENTS

Looking at the Minto Cup website ( http://www.minto-cup.ca/sponsors.htm ), I don't see the NLL listed under sponsors; however, I'll bet that NLL scouts will be there with drool running down their chins.

Like I said...

If they are looking for goalies where's Jr Shamrock standout Matt Flindell? He wins two league awards during the regular season, wins the MVP award leading the Jr Shamrocks to the Minto Cup ending Burnaby's streak of 13 straight Minto Cup appearances . Matt had over a 88% save percentage during the regular season and playoffs. Played in 20 of Victoria's 21 games amassing 1136 minutes of play out of a possible 1200 and his goal against average was less than 4.9 for the regular season and playoffs . I think Matt deserves to be there to showcase his talent

Just to be a bit picky about the way the participants are listed on NLL.com.
I realize that the league wants to promote American talent which will grow the game in the US and so the NCAA can pat themselves on the back for producing pro players, I do understand.
I would like to see not just which Colleges these young men attended but which CLA programs they have been a part of where applicable. My pre-teen son doesn't give a damn where Rhys Duch played college but wants to know that he also plays for the Shamrocks in Victoria.
I know we need to grow the game in the US and promote US players and programs but I don't want the league to forget about the numerous CLA programs who have produced the superior box talent that the league relies upon.

Moose, relax!

Everyone knows that the combine is just a chance for the field guys to show that they can perform in tighter quarters & hit a goal that's smaller than a garage door.

The real box showcase is at the Minto so enjoy!

Moose,

You are also making an assumption that he wants to play in the NLL.. He may not be interested or feel his real job takes too much time, or other reasons.. IT does happen...

Of course, if he playing in the Minto.. then I would assume NLL scouts would see him there...

Combine is mainly for people the scouts with whom they would not be familiar to give them a chance to get some time in front of them.
