Default flash in the pans

the lopside trade thread inspired me with this idea...which players showed the most promise and then just as quick, pfft. i'm not talking about giving up the sport because of a lack of committment, but guys that looked like an nll baller and within 3 years couldn't hold a spot on a practice squad roster.

1 - mark frye was a max seibald type player that could do it all and had a pair og darn good looking seasons w/ the ny saints. by season 3 mark tailed off and was traded to philly for streibel who to my reckoning never played for them. i really thought mark would had regained his glory days and his first game here, i believe it was a rout of calgary, mark looked mark of old, then mark just looked old.

2 - joe hiltz looked like a serious sniper when he first took the floor. he replaced chris panos as the 2nd look on the baltimore thunder after gary gait and was a buzzsaw on the man-up. i don't think he even made it to pittsburgh, and i think played a smidgen for the old express.

3 - gewas schindler totally frustrates me. there were some nights he could be breaking ankles and some nights i thought he didn't care. he got moved out of philly and turned in a decent year on columbus but then became everybody's expansion pick. i think he is now more famous for probably getting the longest suspension, or at least the most expensive fine, in the history of mll for using the wrong equipment ** not warrior ** in a game. it was a like a 25-33% of the season gone.

4 - kim squire is a tragedy and is out of bounds for this thread.

5 - the mike regan we saw in philly was a shadow of what we saw of him when he was with albany.

6 - andrew martin, or "socks" was the golden one on a revamped wings defense that oneil and mueller had to scrape up after 2001 cup win when the team lost the backline. he had a famous night when he held tavares to a double goose-egg when the wings won a 1-goal nail biter. socks had it all - he had enough barely legal girls screaming his name out thast you would had thought he was the missing jonas brother. by season 3 - no talent and was thankfully gone.

7 - jamie rooney could be on here as a super season in philly turns into a pat timer in his sophmore year and he be another...

8 - andrew burkholder.

Doug Joe Hiltz was North of 30 in the time period you are talking about. He was also an original Turbo. Joe was not so much a flash in the pan as he was a guy who lived out west and chose not to relocate east. Not many teams were flying in many players back when he was at his peak. Since MILL teams were limited to 4 Canadians it made little sense to fly in players from the west coast.

why are soo many from philly...

9 - dan finck looked like he had a solid wheel and might had made a career in the nll but he couldn't keep a spot on the expansion edmonton rush.

10- ramar clash, apart from a great sounding name, had a nice rookie seasaon but a game or two w/ ny in season 2 and never see him again.

11- brian tower was a beast on the road with philly but i i figured he would had gotten more game time w/ the titans = gone by season 2.

Interesting thread I think you need look no further than who was steering the ship with the Wings collapse. They may be from the old town but Lindsay was responsible for those players removal.

I have to say that I like Jamie Rooney quite a bit. It's more of what he does without the ball though...not necessarily scoring.

They took away his illegal stick

Seriously, there's a thread somewhere in the archive. He struggled the rest of that season and has ever since as well.

Actually after Doug's great list, Josh Ruelle came to mind. Not that his flash was even that bright, But with his size, he looked like he would be an absolute beast.

I don't know the story behind Tom Phair but I have seen on some International Field tournies but hasn't been in the NLL for years. He was a stud on the D side and good at the faceoff circle.

Another player to watch on this list would be Delby Powless.

mark might be called a bust - but in terms of what the 1st pick in the draft should bring and then at best a fogo fodder where fogo's are not that highlr desired then he belongs.

Ramar Clash simply wasn't NLL material. He literally had only *one* dodge, and it was the bull dodge. And, he didn't pass much, either. It probably worked really well for him in college. But, as soon as he started in the NLL, he found that every team had at least one defender who could hold back his fairly large frame without help. And, it seemed like he either didn't understand that it wasn't working, or didn't know how to do anything else. Most of his goals came from odd-man rushes, when he got a clean look at the net. So, I wouldn't even call him a flash in the pan. He was out of his element.

It's a shame. Some good coaching could have helped him use his physical gifts a bit better.

good points on missed opportunities w/ clash. decent skillset, really good size but give the saints priorities back then - survival - if he had gone to a team willing to let him learn the game might had been a 15-20 goal scorer.

Would you trade him? Knowing you will not get equal value in return. Plus losing more fans? When your attendance has been tanking for a few seasons.
